What is a Surgical Field Camera?

For those unfamiliar with the medical field, the term “surgical field” may sound confusing. In medicine, it refers to the area that is visible during a surgical procedure. In other words, it is similar to what we normally call the “field of vision,” but specifically used in the context of surgery. Once we understand this concept, the definition of a surgical field camera becomes clear.

Surgical Field in Practice

Before a surgery begins, the patient’s skin is disinfected, and sterile drapes are used to cover areas not involved in the procedure. The exposed area that needs to be operated on is defined as the surgical field.

  • Before any incision, the exposed skin is already considered the surgical field.

  • During surgery, as the procedure progresses, the field changes dynamically.

  • In minimally invasive or endoscopic surgery, the surgical field corresponds to the endoscope’s view.

Why Use a Surgical Field Camera?

A surgical field camera is designed to clearly and accurately capture this area of operation. Under surgical shadowless lamps, some tissue details may not be easily visible with the naked eye. A professional medical-grade camera ensures accurate color reproduction and high-definition clarity, which are essential for teaching, recording, and clinical observation.
